Day Two of Freelancing

Yesterday I announced setting up my own business and I couldn't believe the amount of traffic and enquiries I received. I didn't think January was the time to tout for business but maybe it is – there's a lot of people thinking about the year ahead and now's the time to start making plans for marketing and social media. Promoting my "big news" on facebook, linkedin, instagram and twitter was really the key to kickstarting this adventure and I'm so happy to have so many supportive people out there to share it. So a huge thanks to all of you!

I had three potential client meetings today and it was really great to sit down and have a good chat. I'd allowed two hours for each meeting and only the first one went for that long, but it was good to build in that extra time so I didn't feel like I was having to rush anyone. I love hearing a business owner tell me why they're so passionate about their business, how they started and what sets them apart from everyone else. I think that's the key to good marketing and there's nothing like a face-to-face chat to get an idea of what a business is about. So far, I've never a met a business owner who is blasé about their own business which is a relief!

I also toyed around with making an instagram story about my day which I've done a few times now. I did video a bit of me speaking direct to camera but then got far too self conscious to share it! While walking around, I discovered a couple of great new places including Picnic, a new vegan cafe and Oaka Supercity, an Asian supermarket – they're both in Merchant City. If I'm ever feeling a bit flat and demotivated, I find being in Glasgow really re-invigorates and inspires me. So it was really nice to have a bit of a chance to walk around once my meetings were done and mentally decompress!

There's a huge amount of admin involved in setting up your own business and so in my next post, I'm going to write about some of the great local Glasgow businesses I've used so far – from graphic design, to insurance and more. I really do believe in promoting small, independent businesses and so it was only natural for me to turn to locals when I'm spending money on my business.
